A flat tea caddy (hira-natsume) made by Ichigo Icchō (1898-1991). The wooden body is finished in polished black lacquer (roiro) and decorated with images of distant mountains (enzan 遠山), sprinkled and polished (togidashi maki-e) in gold and aokin (alloy of gold and silver). The interior and base are finished with fine silver lacquer and the rims with gold lacquer.

 

The bottom is signed Icchō saku ("Made by Icchō"). Inside the lid is an abbreviated signature (kaō) in red by the 15th head (iemoto) of the Urasenke tea ceremony school, Hōunsai 鵬雲斎 (*1923), who also inscribed on the lid of the wooden box: Yama hira-natsume ("Flat tea caddy with mountains"), indicating that this is a high-quality tea ceremony tool.

 

The tea caddy comes with original, fitted wooden box (tomobako), signed on the side: Enzan hira-natsume, Icchô saku ("Distant mountains tea caddy, made by Icchō") and sealed: Icchō, and wrapping cloth (tomogire), sealed: Icchō.
